6 Popular Self-Drive Routes in Uganda

Uganda, a premier safari destination in Africa, boasts a wealth of natural and cultural attractions.  Exploring these gems often involves journeys ranging from 2 to 10 hours, and a 4×4 vehicle is essential for navigating the diverse terrain, especially off-road.  Whether you’re drawn to wildlife, mountains, lakes, rivers, or cultural encounters, Uganda offers a variety of routes accessible by both paved highways and rugged tracks.  Here are six popular self-drive routes to inspire your Ugandan adventure:

Entebbe to Kampala (51 km)

This 1.5-hour drive (depending on traffic) connects Entebbe International Airport to Kampala, Uganda’s capital.  Along the way, discover attractions like the Entebbe Zoo, the city center, beaches, botanical gardens, resort hotels, and the Reptile Village.

Masaka to Mbarara (138 km)

This route links central and western Uganda, offering access to prominent national parks. The drive from Kampala to Mbarara takes approximately 2.5 hours, while the Masaka to Mbarara leg is about an hour.  Explore Lake Mburo National Park, Isingiro Center, and Kibale Forest along this stretch.

Kampala to Masindi (213 km)

Journey to Uganda’s most famous wildlife park, Murchison Falls National Park, and the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary via this route.  The drive also opens doors to the Budongo Forest, the Polish Cemetery, and the Masindi crafts village.  Many visitors choose this route for the chance to see the “Big Five.”

Kampala to Jinja (80 km)

Jinja, known as the adventure capital of East Africa, is easily accessible via this 80km highway.  Discover the source of the Nile River, Itanda and Bujagali Falls, Lugazi sugar cane plantations, local fish landing sites, and the Jinja city center.  Jinja’s favorable weather and welcoming locals add to its appeal.

Masaka to Kasese (via Mbarara)

This combined route unlocks access to Queen Elizabeth National Park (for game drives and Kazinga Channel boat cruises), the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, and primate tracking in Kibale Forest. The drive from Masaka to Mbarara is about 1 hour, and from Mbarara to Kasese, it’s approximately 2 hours and 42 minutes.

Mbarara to Kabale 125 km

This route, stretching from Mbarara to the Rwandan border at Katuna, is popular with travelers heading to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.  A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bwindi is home to over half of the world’s mountain gorilla population, as well as diverse flora and fauna.
