Frequently Asked Questions about Car Rentals in Uganda with Supreme Car Rental Uganda

Renting a car in Uganda offers an incredible opportunity to explore the country’s breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cities, and diverse wildlife at your own pace. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, Supreme Car Rental Uganda has compiled this comprehensive guide to frequently asked questions.

1. What documents do I need to rent a car from Supreme Car Rental Uganda?

To rent a vehicle with Supreme Car Rental Uganda, you will typically need:

Valid Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license from your home country is usually sufficient for short-term stays (up to three months). If your license is not in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is highly recommended as a translation, though not always mandatory.

Passport: For international visitors, a valid passport is essential for identification. Ugandan nationals can use their National Identity Card.

Credit Card: A credit card in the primary renter’s name is generally required for a security deposit and to cover any additional charges. In some cases, cash deposits or debit cards might be accepted, but it’s best to confirm this with us in advance.

Rental Agreement: You will need to sign our comprehensive rental agreement, which outlines all terms and conditions.

Proof of Return Travel/Accommodation (Optional): In some instances, we may request proof of your return flight or hotel reservation.

2. What are the age requirements for renting a car?

At Supreme Car Rental Uganda, the minimum age to rent a car generally ranges from 23 years old. For certain vehicle categories, especially luxury SUVs, the minimum age might be 25 years or above, with a requirement of having held a driver’s license for a specified number of years (e.g., 3 years). Please confirm the specific age requirements for your desired vehicle type when booking.

3. What type of insurance is included, and do I need additional coverage?

The Car Insurance Policy Covers Only the Vehicle and does not offer personal life insurance for the occupants therefore you are required to come with life insurance from your home country.

NOTE THIS: Any damages caused by negligence for example driving while drunk, cigarette burns, punctures, wheels or trims, dents and any other minor damages are not covered by the insurance policy. The hirer/ client must get a police report and also make a police statement in case of any accident because without the above document, the hirer is to meet all the expenses. The company insurance bases on the police report to compensate the damages.

EXCESS INSURANCE

Excess insurance is charged by the office depending on the vehicle type.

Saloons and small SUVs are charged USD 350 and large SUVs are charged USD 1000.

This amount is payable before the commencement of the trip and is fully refunded at the end of the trip in case there are no car damages. In case of damages, a deduction of this amount is assessed according to the level of damage and the balanced returned in case of any.

4. What is Uganda’s driving side and common road conditions?

Uganda drives on the left-hand side of the road. Most vehicles in the country are Right-Hand Drive (RHD). If you are accustomed to LHD vehicles, please be aware of this difference.

Main highways are generally well-paved, but you should still anticipate:

Speed Bumps: These are very common, especially when approaching towns and villages.

Potholes: Can be present on all roads, requiring vigilance.

Unpredictable Traffic: Especially in urban areas like Kampala, traffic can be heavy and chaotic.

Varying Road Conditions: Roads leading to national parks and remote areas are often gravel or dirt, and conditions can change significantly with the weather.

We recommend driving defensively, being aware of your surroundings, and avoiding night driving if possible due to poor visibility and unmarked obstacles.

5. What are the typical daily driving times and recommendations?

Unless the vehicle has to pick or drop at or from the airport, the vehicle has to stop operating at 7:00pm and beyond the mentioned time, the hirer is responsible for whatever happens to the vehicle.

The speed limit while in National Parks is 40KM/hr. and one is supposed to drive within the tracks. In case these rules are broken by the client, he/she I supposed to pay USD 150 to Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Animals in the National Park have full Rights of way and the clients must be 100 meters Away from them, especially the Fierce ones like Elephants. The operator will not be liable to the damages caused to the car

6. Can I take the rental car across Uganda’s borders?

Yes, Supreme Car Rental Uganda allows cross-border travel to neighboring East African countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania. However, this must be arranged and approved in advance at the time of booking.

Additional fees will apply, including a charge for COMESA insurance (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa), which is mandatory for international travel. You will also need specific authorization letters and vehicle registration documents from us to present at border crossings. Failure to obtain prior consent and necessary documentation can lead to significant penalties.

7. What is the fuel policy?

Our standard fuel policy is typically “¼ to ¼” or “same level return”. This means you receive the vehicle with a certain fuel level, and you are expected to return it with the same amount. No credit is usually given for unused fuel. Alternatively, a “Full-to-Full” policy may be available upon request, where you receive the car with a full tank and return it full.

We advise taking fuel from reputable petrol stations like Total, Shell, or PetroCity. Always use the correct fuel type (petrol/gasoline for most rental vehicles) to avoid mechanical issues.

8. What should I do in case of a breakdown or accident?

In case the Vehicle involves in an accident, is damaged, breaks down or requires any repair regardless of cause, the Hirer must notify the Operator/company of the circumstance immediately.

The Hirer must not arrange or undertake any repairs of the vehicle or leave the scene of accident before police inspection and the Operator’s/ Company authority.

In case the vehicle requires repair or replacement, the operator/office must arrange it within a reasonable time frame (24Hours), BUT the operator will not repair or replace it if it was damaged while being operated in a manner which breaches the agreement.

In case of mechanical breakdown, we provide replacement of the vehicle. We take care of the fuel charges to bring the replacement car and then you also provide the fuel to return the car that has broken down.

9. Are there any restrictions on where I can drive the rental car?

Generally, our vehicles are permitted on all gazetted roads and within national parks. However, driving off-track in national parks is strictly prohibited and can result in significant fines from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Driving in prohibited areas, engaging in reckless driving (e.g., speeding, driving under the influence, driving through deep water), or causing damage due to negligence may void your insurance and make you fully responsible for all repair costs and fines.

10. How and when should I return the vehicle?

At the end of the car rental program, the Hirer must deliver the Vehicle to the place of business of the Operator or obtain the Operator’s consent to the continuation of the hire (the Hirer must pay additional hire charges for the extended term of hire).

11. Can I request a specific vehicle model?

While Supreme Car Rental Uganda strives to provide the exact model you request, we guarantee the vehicle group and specifications (e.g., SUV, sedan, automatic transmission). In circumstances beyond our control, we reserve the right to substitute the reserved car type with a similar or higher car group.

12. What are the payment methods ?

Payments for rentals are typically made in cash upon arrival, or via bank transfer to our USD account in Kampala. Visa credit card payments may be accepted with a surcharge, often required several days before the rental commencement.
